Ativan (Lorazepam)
loading...
Ativan is in a group of drugs called benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZE-eh-peens). It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety.
Ativan is used to treat anxiety disorders.
Ativan may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Most important: Do not use Ativan if you are allergic to lorazepam or to other benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam (Xanax), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), clorazepate (Tranxene), diazepam (Valium), or oxazepam (Serax). This medication can cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not use Ativan if you are pregnant.
Before taking Ativan, tell your doctor if you have any breathing problems, glaucoma, kidney or liver disease, or a history of depression, suicidal thoughts, or addiction to drugs or alcohol.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Ativan. This medication can increase the effects of alcohol.
Avoid using other medicines that make you sleepy. They can add to sleepiness caused by this medication.
Ativan may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Ativan should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it.
It is dangerous to try and purchase Ativan on the Internet or from vendors outside of the United States. Medications distributed from Internet sales may contain dangerous ingredients, or may not be distributed by a licensed pharmacy. Samples of Ativan purchased on the Internet have been found to contain haloperidol (Haldol), a potent antipsychotic drug with dangerous side effects.

i have been on Ativan for 9 years now, to help control my anxiety/panic disorder. I have tried other medications, and were allergic to most, so this works best for me. The worst fear i have ,is that i am afraid my doctor will try to take me off this medicine. Seems they always want me to try something else. I am comfortable with the Ativan. If I have to take it the rest of my life, I will feel safe ntaking this medicine, because no other has helped me. I can function properly everyday, and I know Ativan has been around for many years.
I trust Ativan, and my worst fear is not being able to have doctor prescribe it for me,for I know I will have serious withdrawls.I thank God for Ativan, and the therapy that is out there to help me live my life normally.

Great for mania and panic attacks. I have been prescribed Ativan for acute mania and for panic attacks.
When taken during a manic episode, Ativan makes me feel more “normal” then I ever have before. I’m able to drive, to focus on tasks, and it calms the shaking.
When taken at the start of a panic attack, it seems to go into effect quickly (about fifteen minutes) and calms the feeling of not being able to breathe.
The doctor wants me to take it twice a day, but it doesn’t seem to be quite as effective when taken that way. I prefer to keep the pills in a keychain pill holder and take them as needed. Otherwise, I’ve noticed that I have muted panic attacks – breathing problems that aren’t so bad that I think I’m dieing, but enough that I have to focus in order to keep calm.
I’ve taken this for weeks straight, then skipped a week, and it doesn’t seem to cause any withdrawl effects for me. After taking a break, it seems to be more effective.
I have taken 2mgs at night for insomnia, but that doesn’t help at all. I have noticed that taking 1mg along with 10-15mg of Ambien is effective… but, as I’ve said, this med doesn’t work as well if you take it too often. If I happen to have a panic attack before bedtime, then I sleep well that night. If I do it every night, there’s no real benefit.
