Unisom Sleep Gels Can be purchased generic which makes it very cost effective, but if you buy the namebrand Unison it can be expensive. I rated cost effectiveness based on purchasing name brand of Unisom. Generic brand's cost effectiveness I would rate a 9!

Diphenhydramine HCL helps me sleep I used generic Sominex (diphenhydramine HCL) for sleep for many years - sometimes in conjunction with Lorazepam (Ativan). It worked very well. I no longer use it because I don't want to get dependent on antihistamines, which also dry out your mucous membranes.

very drowsy This stuff works great!!! Every time I take it, it clears up all of my allergies (and I have A LOT!!) The only drawback is it makes you very sleepy so I only recommend this around bedtime or if you plan to do absolutely nothing all day!

Benadryl works as emergency remedy I am anaphylactic to peanuts and I have not had to use my epi-pen when I have taken one or two benadryl right away. HOwever, the medication made me extremely fatigued and nauseous

Old Faithful I have tried the newer, non-drowsy antihistamines and have found that none really do an all over better job with my allergies than Benadryl. Nothing handles hives and itching better. Nothing handles allergy induced nausea better. For nasal allergies this always works, which I can't vouch the others for.I have found that if I am getting unwanted drowsiness from the Benadryl, that cutting the dosage back, in either frequency or amount, usually works.
