Flonase (Fluticasone nasal)
loading...
Flonase is a nasal spray containing the corticosteriod fluticasone. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.
Flonase is used to treat nasal symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, and runny nose caused by seasonal or year-round allergies.
Flonase may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Most important: Before using Flonase, tell your doctor if you are using antifungal medications such as ketoconazole (Nizoral), or HIV medicines such as ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra).
While using Flonase, tell your doctor if you have severe or ongoing nose bleed, vision problems, sores in the nose that won’t heal, or if you have fever, chills, body aches, or flu symptoms.
Shake Flonase well just before each use. It may take up to several days of using this medicine before your symptoms improve. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a week of treatment. Store the nasal spray in an upright position at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Throw the medication away after you have used 120 sprays, even if there is still medicine left in the bottle.
Flonase can lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people who are using this medicine.
Do not give Flonase to a child younger than 4 years old without the advice of a doctor. Steroid medicines can affect growth in children. Talk with your doctor if you think your child is not growing at a normal rate while using this medication.

Very useful when you need a bit more relief I’ve used this off and on since 2003 for severe allergic rhinitis. I don’t like using it because it causes a really bad sore throat, a bad stomach ache, and I can’t stand the rose scent (makes a lot of sense to give something used to treat allergies the smell of flowers). That said, when I get really bad (mold count is really high), I have to use this spray. I use Mucinex and Zyrtec-D every day – these are normally more than sufficient in preventing migraines from congestion as well as serious dizziness from fluid build-up in my ears. However, the weather has been so odd this year (very mild and wet) that I’m having too many migraine episodes and too many episodes of the spins. As a result, I’ve had to again use Flonase. The good news is that within 4 doses (2 days), the fluid was gone from my ear, the spinning had stopped and the migraine was manageable. The bad news is that it caused the fluid to rush into my stomach causing a lot of nausea. My STRONG suggestion is to make sure you have a full stomach before using this. Since each person may react differently, it’s best not to allow your stomach to get completely empty as you never know when a post-nasal drip will speed up (your sinus passages expand from the steroid in Flonase). There’s a tradeoff – I’ve had a stomach ache since I began using it several days ago but, I’ve also been able to get out of bed, walk a straight line, and take MUCH less Zomig (for migraines). One other suggestion – use a saline spray to prevent nose bleeds (which are somewhat common with use of Flonase).

I found it to be not as good as the doctor claims it to be. The taste of flowers in the back of your throat is gross. Made me sick to my stomach.

Itches. Flonase is alright. I prefered Zyrtec. I found that the spray was very itchy and made me sneeze more.

Benefits: I have had a cough for 15 years I related to allergies, plus post nasal drip that kept me up at night coughing. Had sinus infections every year and then twice a year, went to dr and would be on antibiotics for 10 days or so and get better. Well I finally went to a specialist and all the previous years I thought I was better, I was not. My sinus were so infected he said I had a chronic sinus infection which was probably 4 years old. He treated me for months with antibiotics and still could not clear up infection. Sent me to Ear, nose , throat dr. and he wanted to do surgery right away. That was 2 months ago. After using the Flonase in combination with singular I have not had any problems. Post nasal drip gone!!! which is a huge blessing. Wish I had this nasal spray 10 years ago.
Side Effects: When I was using 2 sprays each morning I did have nose bleeds. Since I reduced it to one spray each side no more bleeds.
Comments: I use every morning at the same time along with the Singular.

Benefits: This drug reduced inflammation in the nasal passages, successfully treated hay-fever type symptoms, and also helped with hoarseness probably due to the fact that it cleared up post nasal drip. I like to sing and I found I could sing longer without getting hoarse.
Side Effects: I experienced no side effects, but I was careful not to use this drug continuously over a long period of time, just in case. Generally I would start using it when symptoms were bad, stay on it for 2 to 3 weeks, then ease off.
Comments: 2 sprays in each nostril once per day. It takes about 36 hours to notice a beneficial effect. Once my allergies were cleared up I could cut the dose in half and stay allergy free.

flonase side effects Am person with severe MCS with lots of daily headaches from odors, etc. Sinusitis a frequent problem. The headaches are killer! Tried Flonase two seperate times in past 9 yrs. Most recent test as bad as first time. Slightly lilac scent from med was not desired at all. Much sneezing followed each spray each day. Day 3 = intermttent bleeding in nose. Very dry membranes in nose with usage. All in all could not give it a fair opportunity to perform as desired due to unpleasant level of side effects. I did so want it to work for me!

Excellent I have been using flonase to combat my allergies for several years now. I know it works because on the days that I forget to use the flonase, my allergies seem to be the worst.

After just about one week of using Flonase, I developed severe nosebleeds. They were so bad that I actually left a trail of blood from my workplace to the restroom! I stopped using it, but ended up in emergency twice and eventually having the vessels in my nose cauterized to stop the bleeding. It was a very painful experience

First of all I’ve been an allergy suffer for most of my life, but now menopausal my allergies are worse. After years or suffering with migraines, sinus infections & sinus headaches I finally gave in & saw someone. To my shock the specialist told me had sinus polyps! These are caused by allergies, which bring on the sinus headaches, which turns into a blinding migraine. After a painful surgery of having them removed, I was prescribed an ongoing treatment of Flonase once a day with Rhinocort. Of course the first step is a 8 oz. saline flush. Yes the polyps are back, that happened only 6 weeks after surgery. But this with the Rhinocort are the only thing that knock down the swelling internally enough minimize the blinding migraines. There were actually weeks at time I couldn’t even work because of them. So for all the negative effects it may have, which some I can compensated for, I don’t think I could function without it. I know this because I’ve tried. I went off of them (Flonase & Rhinocort) for almost year. What a mistake!
I paid dearly for it. So if your side effects aren’t severe, as some are, you might want to reconsider. You might even want to see if your allergies are severe enough, if you have polyps. The polyps make it impossible for your sinuses to drain & in my case, at times my eyes would swell shut. My surgeon never has realised me, but thank God for the wonders of science!
