Indocin (Indomethacin)
loading...
Indocin is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Indocin works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
Indocin is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis, or tendinitis.
Indocin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Most important: This medicine can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. This risk will increase the longer you use Indocin. Do not use this medicine just before or after having heart bypass surgery (also called coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).
Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of heart or circulation problems, such as chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.
This medicine can also increase your risk of serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and gastrointestinal effects can occur without warning at any time while you are taking Indocin. Older adults may have an even greater risk of these serious gastrointestinal side effects.
Call your doctor at once if you have symptoms of bleeding in your stomach or intestines. This includes black, bloody, or tarry stools, or coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Indocin. Alcohol can increase the risk of stomach bleeding caused by Indocin.
Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, allergy, or pain medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. Many medicines available over the counter contain aspirin or other medicines similar to Indocin (such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen). If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of this type of medication. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen.

Like Naproxon for me this druf really does not provide much releif during an acute attack not does it shorten the duration of the attack. There are not many drugs that have I suufer side effects from but more than 1 pill in 24hurs shreds my stomach everytime with this drug.
Prednisone is the only medication I have taken that very quickly alleviates the attack and almost clears it up in amtter of a few hours. This drug does not.

After the first time I took it I got diarrhea, but that was a normal side effect. Now I take it every time I have a gout attack with Prednisone. I take it overnight and I am gout free the next morning.

Indomethacin When I was first diagnosed in the fall of 1997 I was taking 50 mg capsules three times a day. in 2003 my blood work started to show it was affecting my kidney. I was slowly weaned down to two 25 mg capsules per day.
I also take a 150 mg tablet of Ratio-Ranitidine with each capsule; I find this aleviates the heartburn and acid reflux I was getting.

Indomethacin Suppositories 100mg They work, but dissolve easily which makes them difficult to use. Cerebral side effects are not too unpleasant. Constipation or diarrhoea can occasionally be dire.
Please note: I was tried on tablets. Cessation of peristalsis meant they had no chance of working. I use the suppositories as required. I’m not supposed to take more than one a day and I’m glad to say I have only twice needed to disregard that stiulation.

After discovering alergic reactions to other meds for gout, this was like a miracle drug for the Gout. Taken “as needed”, a two month prescription lasted over five months and no “listed” side effects. It definately goes right to the source and almost instant pain relief.

This damaged my stomach permanently After a car accident in 2000, I was adverse to taking Narcotics, so the doctor gave me this stuff and it was good, very good at relieving pain. It helped so much I called the doctor to thank him. A few weeks into using it, I started getting sharp pains under the right side of my rib cage and I thought I had a gall bladder problem. It had me doubling over at points. I went to a gastroenterologist and was scoped, and I discovered that I had one serious case of gastritis (I can only imagine how terrible an actual ulcer is). Now I’m sorry I ever took the stuff because to this day I can’t take any NSAID except a Cox-2 inhibitor like Vioxx or Bextra (which are dangerous and I’m stopping them too, due to cardiovascular side effects now being reported) without having stomach pains within a few days of starting – which has put me in a difficult situation as my back is a near constant issue.

Indomethacin I tried this to rule out Paroxysmal Hemicrania owing to the number of hits I was having a day. I took it in conjunction with a strong antacid as it can be very harsh on your stomach. Whilst I believe it is up to 80% efective for PH and some CH sufferer’s have had success with it.. I wasn’t one of them. I do believe though that it was worth a trial.

Indocin I have been taking Indomethacin for 2 1/2 years now and I am still suffering from the side effects. Those are my biggest problem with the medicine. It has been very helpful though with relieving headaches. I went from all day, every day headaches, to rarely getting one.

Indomethacin Took up to 75 mg 4 times per day along with an antacid to minimize damage to my stomach. It did nothing for the cluster attacks themselves, but did break a constant “shadow” I had had for months. I think indomethacin should be one of the first meds prescribed in the diagnostic phase to help rule out Paroxysmal Hemicranias (PH) (it is almost 100% effective against PH) and confirm clusters where the effectiveness drops very low.

I have had an excellent experience with this medication! Less than 24 hours ago, I was experiencing profound pain in the joint of my big toe. The pain was constant and stabbing and I was unable to drive myself to the doctor. I called his office, and he called in a prescription for me. Within two hours of taking the medication, the pain was easing. It was completely gone when I awoke and is only just now, after my being on my feet for 7 hours, beginning to creep back in. I feel confident that an Advil will “tide me over” until I can take my next dose in five hours.
