Latest news and information on Lunesta
Lunesta is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia).
Lunesta is used to treat insomnia. This medication causes relaxation to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
Lunesta may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Most important: Lunesta may cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking Lunesta and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Lunesta will make you fall asleep. Never take this medication during your normal waking hours, unless you have at least 8 hours to dedicate to sleeping.
Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, or making phone calls and later having no memory of the activity. If this happens to you, stop taking Lunesta and talk with your doctor about another treatment for your sleep disorder.
Lunesta can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy the morning after taking the medication. Until you know how this medication will affect you during waking hours, be careful if you drive, operate machinery, pilot an airplane, or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking this medication. It can increase some of the side effects of Lunesta, including drowsiness.
Lunesta may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for.
Lunesta should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it.
You may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking this medication after taking it over several days in a row. Do not stop taking Lunesta suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.

I had been taking Ambien for insominia for three years, which had been working fine, but I wanted to try Lunesta to see the difference. Don’t do this!!! I got no sleep and Lunesta left a bad taste in my mouth. I couldn’t enjoy cokes or coffee right for days afterwards. Ambien is the drug of choice for sleep, not Lunesta. Lunesta is expensive and doesn’t have the knock-out sleep and feel great the next morning kick that Ambien has.

I have been using this for several years now. Mostly it works, though I have nights when I still can’t fall asleep. I have a really hard time getting up in the morning, even when I had a good nights sleep. I do have some memory loss of things that happen after I have taken it at night…no sleepwalking or anything like that though. I am on the 5mg. My Dr. has talked to me about switching to Ambien, but I told him now so far.

Trazodone as a sleep aid Trazadone will knock me out at the 50 Mg – 100 Mg strengths. I just cannot tolerate the side effects. I am totally zoned out for most of the following day. This drug may work well for some but it does not work with my body chemistry.

Highly Disappointed in Lunesta with all I have been hearing with the lunesta adds at how you can get a good 8 hours sleep and stay asleep. Not for me it was like I took nothing. It gave the back of my tongue a burnt feeling and anything cold made it worse. I will stick with ambien at least that will give me a couple hours sleep.

Dissapointing at first, now looking better Too overprised, even with insurance, for so-so benefits. I have had better success taking a product called ZMA which contains a high dose of magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B6. I hear that magnesium alone is quite effective too. Anyone with insomnia issues should definately try quality magnesium supplements!

This is the best sleep aide I have ever taken. So what with the taste in your mouth, at least you can get a good nights sleep. I am a nurse and have tried Ambien, Sonata, Restoril, Antidepressants and none of them work. Only Lunesta

I now fall asleep within 30 mins. and am able to sleep restfully through the night about 90% of the time. If I do awake in the middle of the night I don’t have that drugged groggy feeling and I’m still able to go back to sleep quickly. I feel refreshed & clear minded in the morning. Only side effect was a nasty after-taste for about 2 weeks.

For the past several weeks have suffered from chronic insomnia induced by night shift work. I knew only drugs could help me in this situation. At-+ first the drug didn’t have the effects that I had desired (quick sedation, no waking back up) and I was upset at how much I spent on it. But I kept taking them and eventually I began sleeping longer and longer without waking up and got a full seven hours last night (Feb, 15, 08). I wake up feeling very well rested, but still a big groggy. Which is much better than feeling unrested *and* groggy.

After taking Lunesta for a couple of weeks, I had a horrible experience. I arrived home after work, in the early am. The next thing I remember is I was in jail. I was told that my mom found me outside, in the garage, asleep ( 10 degrees) and when she woke me she was upset that I was asleep outside. I was told that I then became agitated, tried to take my young son and drive away, stopped by my mom; I pushed her and then punched my 21 year old sister that came in her defense. They called 911 to help control the situation…now…I am being faced with my ex-husband taking me to court with allogations that I am abusing prescription drugs and is seeking custody of my son! I have been told by two healthcare professionals that Lunesta can have some serious side effects…

Not very promising I have been taking Lunesta only as needed to fall asleep. I don’t take it every night. My bit problem is I want to try taking 2 3mg pills but am afraid of the side effects or problems that would occur with doubleing the dose. Has anyone every doubled up on them?

I am 57 yrs old and have had trouble sleeping since I was 19 yr. It makes me go to sleep about 20/30 min after I take it and I sleep good for about 6 to 7 hours. I have been taking every night for over 1 yr..and I do not have to increase the dosage. It works perfect for me.

This medicine does leave a metallic taste in your mouth. Unlike Ambien, The Lunesta does not have me up making food, walking in the driveway a,d other bizarre acts – with no memory of ANY OF IT.
I did like the way ambien knocked you right out, but I had a severe case of getting up while still asleep and doing things, Thank goodness I never got in my car.

Works great if used sparingly. Can’t take more then 1 night in a row otherwise can cause over tiredness. Hallucinations a couple of times. Next day side affects better then other medications such as ambien.
