Latest news and information on Lunesta
Lunesta is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia).
Lunesta is used to treat insomnia. This medication causes relaxation to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
Lunesta may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Most important: Lunesta may cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking Lunesta and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Lunesta will make you fall asleep. Never take this medication during your normal waking hours, unless you have at least 8 hours to dedicate to sleeping.
Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, or making phone calls and later having no memory of the activity. If this happens to you, stop taking Lunesta and talk with your doctor about another treatment for your sleep disorder.
Lunesta can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy the morning after taking the medication. Until you know how this medication will affect you during waking hours, be careful if you drive, operate machinery, pilot an airplane, or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking this medication. It can increase some of the side effects of Lunesta, including drowsiness.
Lunesta may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for.
Lunesta should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it.
You may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking this medication after taking it over several days in a row. Do not stop taking Lunesta suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.

Loved the sleep! Easy to use! However, I was one of those that had memory loss…ex. made plans with niece for the weekend and never remember the conversation…I checked caller ID to show them she never called and I wasn’t crazy…but…she did call…memory loss happened more than once….I’ll only take now in EXTREME cases…I still have kids at home….

Lunesta helps me with my biggest sleep problem, falling to sleep. I’ve noticed that I wake up in the middle of the night with this drug, it’s made me into a very light sleeper. Also, my menstrual periods are completely out of whack, I’ve missed my cycle going on 3 months, and no, I’m not pregnant, believe me that’s the first thing I checked. Also, I’ve gained a little weight, which I hear is normal on this drug. I will most likely stop taking this when my school is over, I will have less anxiety and should be able to fall asleep naturally.

Worst sleeping pill ever I saw the commercial with the butterfly and thought that this was finally going to be the one that keeps me sleeping all night without any interuptions. WRONG, Lunesta did nothing at all. I took up to 3 pills and still had no sleep. I will stay with Ambien CR thank you very much.

Over the years I have tried almost every perscription and over the counter and many alternative methods to sleep. This is by far and away the best. It helps me sleep without feeling druged little or no side affects. Go to sleep fast and stay asleep and wake up refreshed and ready to go no hangover. Ambien is not close to this for me!

Worked but had to double the dose I started taking lunesta after I was not able to fall asleep or stay asleep. Ambien CR did not do anything for me but Lunesta originally worked with 3 mg. It quickly stopped working and I had to move up to taking two 3mg pills (since it does not come in 6 mg). This worked great but insurance would only allow me to get 30 pills a month and doubling the dose caused me to run out in 15 days. I have since found a different medication that works just as well but is a stronger sedative and I am worried about not being able to sleep without drugs. I have also tried acupuncture and it briefly worked but I couldn’t afford to go everyday.

Great for getting to sleep slowly. I take it about one hour to two hours before bed time and i sleep so great. Wake up refreshed. It does cause a wierd taste in your mouth and I asked the doc about that and she said take a glass of milk with it or OJ and that will take that bad taste away.

Initial experience PRO: helps me to get to sleep and remain sleeping (with appropriate dose)
CON: 1)does not give me restful sleep 2) more tired than usual during the day – needing to snooze alot just to function 3)metallic taste in mouth getting worse
NOTES: Only 4 nights on this so far, so this is just my initial experience. However, I have yet to get a good night of sleep on Lunesta which is very disapointing given the promising research. If I lower the dosage to 1mg I wake up after 4hrs and can’t fall asleep. If I up the dosage I am groggy for the entire morning. I will remain at 2mg and hope that my sleep improves. But so far, hard as it is to believe, my already horrible sleep is made worse via Lunesta. But I haven’t given up hope yet. I’ll continue to try it for the next few weeks and see if things get better.
UPDATE: I have to stop lunesta now. Although it can put me to sleep and keep me out (at the right dose), the sleep quality seems poor and I’m feeling awful. If anything I feel like I haven’t slept in days. Very hard to function. Great disapointment here since I have been following the positive research on this drug for almost a year. I’m starting to wonder if any sleep drug that operates on the gaba system will work for me. Ambien, Sonata and now Lunesta seem not to work with me. I’ll definitely retry lunesta at another time and see if I have a better result. For now I need to recover.
I should also mention that for this time on Lunesta I was not taking any supplements and was only on 25mg of Zoloft.

At first I thought I didn’t have a problem with sleep (hard for men to admit), but after taking Lunesta the 1st time, I woke up feeling like all other nights were in vain. I rested the best I have ever rested, and the best part is I woke up feeling really refreshed! WOW, sleep aid with a boost! I now tell people when I take it, that it’s like finding my “comfortable spot” that I don’t want to be moved from, and when I wake up, I am wide awake (no groggy, searching for my glasses, or trying to find the bathroom feeling – actually being AWAKE). The aftertaste is bad, but so is Listerine, Goody Powders, and Castor Oil! I have since found out that if I take it with either orange juice or grape juice, the bad taste is drastically reduced. Lunesta is definitely worth trying (don’t forget the juice)!!!

This drug did nothing for me. I tried it 3 nights in a row and was still up until 5 in the morning. The after taste was also truly disgusting.
I had a lot of hope for this pill and was let down.

I had trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, especially when I was away from home. Lunesta soothes me into sleep and
I usually sleep the full night. I have had
no after-taste nor any grogginess, no crazy dreams or memory loss. Just
a good night’s rest. It works wonderfully
for me.

Lunesta 3mg for me is the best I have ever taken, for almost a year and half. Had no bad side effects. Gives you 8 hours of sleep and you do not wake up tired. Also has helped out my anxiety at night before bed. I rate it 10. I wish Lunesta would make a new pill for anxiety for during the day, and not for sleep. I’m happy.

I have had insomnia on and off for over 3 years. I’ve tried natural supplements and Ambien CR, neither of which worked. Now I’m on Lunesta 3mg and have no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Also, I feel rested when I wake up – not groggy at all. I haven’t had any noticeable side effects either.

I have had problems with insomnia for the past 30 yrs. I started taking Lunesta a year ago, it works perfect for me. The only drawback is that I occasionally sleep walk at night and clean my house–no memory of that in the morning. My doc told me to take the Lunesta with OJ every night and by the third night the metalic taste is gone. That works for me.

I have had insomnia forever! When I take Lunesta- sometimes 1mg. -sometimes 2mg.; I still have trouble falling asleep and when I do fall asleep, within 2 to 3 hours I wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed READY TO GO! My mind is ready, but my body remains EXHAUSTED!!!!!

I only had one dose of Lunesta and it was my last. I was up for two days without sleep and started throwing up seven hours later, dizzy, nausa and dry heaves the rest of the first day. I know this must be only one of a few that has this type of reaction to the drug but it was bad. Won’t try pill #2.

I began taking Lunesta 3 MG. I have decreased my dosage to one Lunesta 2 Mg. Nightly. It helps me fall asleep but after 5 hours and 30 minutes-6 hours I am awake and would like to sleep a total of eight hours. One night I took three 3 mg. Lunestas and found that my thinking was rather altered. It’s a good medication…I’m not sure that it is effective for six months like the research states.
Sincerest wishes for those with insomnia,
WCM
