Latest news and information on Lunesta
Lunesta is a sedative, also called a hypnotic. It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause sleep problems (insomnia).
Lunesta is used to treat insomnia. This medication causes relaxation to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
Lunesta may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Most important: Lunesta may cause a severe allergic reaction. Stop taking Lunesta and get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Lunesta will make you fall asleep. Never take this medication during your normal waking hours, unless you have at least 8 hours to dedicate to sleeping.
Some people using this medicine have engaged in activity such as driving, eating, or making phone calls and later having no memory of the activity. If this happens to you, stop taking Lunesta and talk with your doctor about another treatment for your sleep disorder.
Lunesta can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. You may still feel sleepy the morning after taking the medication. Until you know how this medication will affect you during waking hours, be careful if you drive, operate machinery, pilot an airplane, or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Do not drink alcohol while you are taking this medication. It can increase some of the side effects of Lunesta, including drowsiness.
Lunesta may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for.
Lunesta should never be shared with another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it.
You may have withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking this medication after taking it over several days in a row. Do not stop taking Lunesta suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely.

I take this on and off to sleep better… i take 3mg because its stronger but it leaves a HORRIBLE taste in your mouth the next day. The 2mg’s dont leave as MUCH of a taste, but i would say thats the only trouble i have with it. plus, it kind of takes a while to kick in. but maybe thats just me.

I have had insomnia most of my life. Now I also have sleep apnea. Got a Bi Pap C Pap machine and I could not get to sleep at all no matter what sleep medicine my doctor tried on me. Finally he tried Lunesta and even though it does not put me to sleep right away I have had better sleep after taking it than probably in my whole life. Bad taste in the morning is my only complaint. I can live with that!

I used Ambien for awhile with horrible side effects. My MD switched me to Lunesta, I have had no adverse side effects (the bad taste side effect lasts on a short time). I have been on it for 2 years now and would not be able to have the quality of life I have if not for this medication.

What a Bust! I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of this medicine. I had built up tolerance to Ambien already. I usually take my meds an hour before bedtime, but I wasn’t sleepy after that amount of time. After another 30 minutes, I would fall asleep. I am not convinced that Lunesta was responsible for that, because I think my Xanax and Seroquel contributed. I went back to Restoril.

I can’t remember anything that I do about 30 minutes after I take Lunesta..the next morning I’m told about phone calls I’ve made, etc….and I don’t remember them..this scares me..because I’m a single mom with 2 precious little boys..I’ve heard about the “metal” taste in your mouth, but haven’t experienced that..

I have had insomnia since I was a child. I have tried many different meds. Ambien made me sleep walk and have horrible nightmares. The worst problem for me is falling asleep because that is when I start “thinking” Lunesta helps me fall asleep within 15-20 minutes. I has made a drastic change in my sleeping, and no longer anxious about going to bed at night!

At first the medication worked well. However, after using it for 6 or more months it is not as effective. Taken at 10PM, sleeping by 11, or so then I wake up in about 4 hours. No naps tired at night and still the same result.

I am happy with Lunesta. I fall asleep quickly and wake up after 8 hours feeling refreshed. I had problems falling asleep and staying asleep. I have been taking this off and on for 2 years. I do have to agree with the terrible taste the next day though. Cant stand it and cant find anything to get rid of it. I just brush about 4 times a day now instead of two.

Benefits: Was able to fall asleep within 30 minutes of taking Lunesta. Stayed asleep for at least 4 hours to 10 hours.
Side Effects: Bad taste in mouth before falling asleep, sleeping too long (10-14 hours), having difficulty waking up after 8 hours or less.
Comments: Due to having depression, Prozac and the anxiety would interfere with sleeping patterns. I take Lunesta as needed to try to correct my sleeping habits. Since I was sleeping too long and having difficulty waking up, I usually only take half a tablet of Lunesta now.

Lunesta is better than Ambien My doctor gave me some samples of Lunesta and I really like it. I find that the Lunesta gives me a full night of sleep. Even if I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, I drift right back to sleep. The Ambien puts me to sleep well and then I usually wake up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep.

not worth the money The first time I took it I feel asleep, but had a hung over feeling the next morning. After that first doasage I did not get sleepy like it said I would. I was quite diappointed in the whole experience. I just wanted to sleep and my doctor had such high hopes for this drug.

Doc put me on 2mg. Took me 3-4 hours to fall asleep but once I did I slept well. However, in the morning I was so sedated that I couldn’t walk without bumping into walls. Doc on call reduced it to 1mg and while it still took me several hours to fall asleep, I slept well and woke up refreshed for the first time in 22 years! I didn’t have the bad taste that so many report, but it did give me a nasty, daily headache for the first weeks or two. After about 2 months on Lunesta 1mg, something has changed – for a week or two it had no effect on me whatsoever. I couldn’t fall asleep or stay asleep. Felt like I wasn’t taking anything at all. Then, I got the nasty headache back, and I started to fall asleep again (but only after 2 hours). Even though I got 8-9 hours sleep, I felt so sedated in the morning that it was hard to wake up and function properly. So, I have mixed feelings on this drug. It was a miracle for a few weeks when I slept well and woke up refreshed and alert, but the majority of my time on it I have not been happy with. I will be asking my doctor to discontinue my prescription as I would rather not spend so much money on something that makes me feel just as poorly on it as off it and doesn’t seem to be taking care of my insomnia as I would like it to.

Great I have been on lunesta for 7 months now and love it. It is nonnarcotic, it puts me to sleep within about 10 to 15 minutes. I wake up rested, not drugged. I usually can sleep for 5 or six hours, sometimes 7 hours. It is great!! The only side affect is that it does leave a bad tast in your mouth the next morning. I will continue to take it as long as it works for me.
