Latest news and information on Pravachol
Pravachol (pravastatin) is in a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins.” Pravastatin reduces levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).
Pravachol is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood.
Pravachol is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors
Pravachol is used in adults and children who are at least 8 years old.
Pravachol may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Most important: You should not take Pravachol if you are allergic to pravastatin, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you have liver disease. Stop taking Pravachol and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant.
Before taking Pravachol, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or a thyroid disorder, or if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.
In rare cases, Pravachol can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine.
Avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. Pravachol will not be as effective in lowering your cholesterol if you do not follow a cholesterol-lowering diet plan.
Avoid drinking alcohol. It can raise triglyceride levels and may increase your risk of liver damage.
There are many other drugs that can increase your risk of serious medical problems if you take them together with Pravachol. Tell your doctor about all medications you use. This includes prescription, over-the-counter, vitamin, and herbal products. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to any healthcare provider who treats you.
Pravachol is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.

I just came back from my ophthalmology and have been told that I am developing a cataract. I am only 53. When I told my doctor that I have been taking Pravachol for the past 3 months, she said that was most likely the cause and for me to read the side effect warning. Sure enough, there it was. Now I don’t know what to do. Guess I have to find another drug or risk heart disease. The Pravachol lowered my cholesterol from 234 to 180 after only 30 days.

My father was given this medication after bypass 2 yrs ago & complained about the burning sensation in his face/he was told it was better than the alternative. After blood test showed chol. level of 167, dr increased to 40 mg in May 2007. He complained of pain in every bone & muscle of his body- he became so weak. He blamed the medication for his pain/stopped taking but too late…his muscles were so weak that his heart gave out in his sleep..I don’t trust this medication at all!

This drug did wonders for my cholesteral but I have experienced an increase in hot flashes, vaginal dryness and now severe dry and red eyes. Has anyone else found that this drug seems to suck every ounce of moisture from their bodies? My Dr took me off them to see if the dry eyes improve.

I took myself off of Zetia afer the bad press. At that time my cholesteral level was great. I was off of cholesterol meds for a year and my level climbed back to 230 so Doc prescribed Pravochol. I was given the generic. Took one pill every other day. Afer first pill felt burning in calf but didn’t connect. Took second pill as directed and major muscles were on fire in addition to achy joints and itching all over. I won’t take another one. It’s been two weeks and my leg muscles are still burning. Doc is now reccommending Welchol or going back to Zetia.

I hate all these statins, can hardly walk or lift anything, was on simvastatin, lipitor now pravastatin, all give you awful side effects. I`m not overweight, cholestersol level 9.7, aged 43, I guess I`ll be living of veg for the rest of my life. No more statins for me. Hopefully my body will get better now I`ve stop taking them.
