Unisom (Doxylamine)
loading...
Unisom is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Unisom is sometimes combined with other medicines to treat sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose caused by allergies or the common cold.
Unisom as a single drug (not part of a combination) is used as a short-term treatment for sleep problems (insomnia).
Unisom may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Most important: Do not give this medication to a child younger than 2 years old. Always ask a doctor before giving a cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children.
Use this medication as directed on the label, or as your doctor has prescribed. Do not use the medication in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist about taking this medication if you have glaucoma, kidney disease, an enlarged prostate, problems with urination, a stomach ulcer or obstruction, or a chronic lung disease such as bronchitis or emphysema.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. It is best to take doxylamine only when you can devote several hours to sleep. If it is almost your normal waking hour, skip the missed dose and wait until you are ready for bed again. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
There may be other drugs that can interact with Unisom. Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor.
Get emergency medical help if you think you have used too much medicine, or if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking this medication. It can add to drowsiness caused by an antihistamine.

Worked at first, now nothing. A few years back, I only had a slight anxiety related insomnia problem. I took it from time to time and it worked pretty well. I didn’t feel any side effects.
As time went on, I needed 2-3 pills to fall asleep on a daily basis. It would take me at least 2 hours to fall asleep, but I slept for 10 hours.
After a head injury and a few deaths in the family, my sleeping got a lot worse. Now, I can take 5-6 and feel nothing. I eventually do fall asleep but wake up later. I’m too afraid to take more :-p. This is the same stuff that’s in NYQUIL. I think nyquil liquid works a little better because of the alcohol. None of that stuff works on me anymore. Neither does Ambien or Sonata. Lunesta worked very well at first, but is losing its effectiveness and takes about an hour to kick in.

Unisom good with right circumstances.. I have found Unisom to be effective if an external health problem is keeping me awake, like a sore knee or sore muscles. For those it does help me sleep through the pain. But if I just can’t sleep for no real reason then it doesn’t help at all.

started off good…not so effective anymore Has anyone gained weight from this? It seems to have slowed down my metabolism. I’m having a really hard time losing a few pounds. I fall asleep easily (around 10:30-11), and worked great for a month or so. However, lately I have been waking up every night around 3-4 am and have a difficult time falling back asleep-if at all, but when I do I am sleeping so soundly-it’s really hard to wake up and can sleeep til 9. I also end up sleeping longer than I would like. Sometimes it makes me feel a bit ‘hungover’ the next day if I don’t sleep through the night-which is more and more these day, not a good feeling. I’ve tried all kinds of sleep aids: Bendadryl, Ambien, Ambien CR, Trazadone, Sonata, Lunesata, Rozerem,Melatonin, L-Tryptophan, even Neurontin (which I gained 10 lbs in 2 weeks on!)…Time to go to the Sleep Clinic-too tired of being tired all the time!

I work 12-hour night shifts in 3-4 night spans. I started taking Unisom as a recommendation from a friend. The first time I took 2 pills (50mg) and felt like crap for 48 hours – although I slept great. Now, I take 1 pill (25mg) when I get home from work and 30 minutes later I am out for 8 hours solid. I am able to get up for the bathroom but fall right back asleep. It takes me an hour or two after waking up to feel the effects lighten. Unisom has worked great for me. I buy brand name from Rite-Aid.

This is the best sleeping aid I’ve had so far, it really knocks you out in just a short while. But don’t overuse it.

Felt like crap the next day I have a very slow metabolism. This stuff was great for knocking me out, but I literally could not get out of bed the next day and spent most of the next day sleeping or feeling extremely drugged. All I wanted to do was go back to bed. If antihistimines tend to have this effect on you, I would recommend only taking HALF of a 25 mg pill. This stuff seems stronger to me than the active ingredient in Benedryl (which is what most sleeping pills are made of).

I have had trouble sleeping most of my life it was after a near miss while driving my car that I realized I needed a good night sleep no matter what, I didnt want to use ambien or anything that strong I started to take unisom gel (1 little pil) Last summer 2 hours before bedtime, I sleep all night and wake up like a brand new person every day, I wouldnt trade a good night sleep for anything!! I never realized how important it was until now. I buy the target brand sometimes and the benfits out weigh the negatives.

If you want to sleep for anywhere from 15 to 26 straight hours and spend the next three days feeling like you’ve had your head detached from your body, then by all means… take it! I tried taking the recommended dosage and it knocked me out flat and left me feeling like total crap for days. Next time I tried taking only 1 tablet and the result was I had a hard time getting to sleep, but then once I did I slept for far too long again! And still felt like crap afterwards!
